"We still brand our calves in the old traditional style with a hot iron and on the ground. We will continue to do this as long as we have the manpower to do it. If a crew of men knows what to do they can work calves as fast as the calf dragger can get them to the fire. We use a branding pot with propane fire mostly but we also dig a pit and brand from an open fire to preserve the life of the branding irons. We brand on the right side of the calf because as a young man working on the ranches where I worked the old men use to drag nearly all the calves to the branding fire roped around neck. This meant that when they went to the ground the right side of the calf was up toward the sky and ready to brand. It's not that way anymore. Nowadays we try to drag the calves to the fire by two back feet. It all makes a difference.'' JLD |
